인공지능 기술의 윤리적·법적·사회적 쟁점들을 연구하고 있는 서울대학교 AI연구원 인공지능 ELSI연구센터(센터장: 천현득)는 아래와 같이 공개 세미나를 개최합니다. 이번 세미나에서는 한양대학교 김희원 박사님을 모시고, 얼굴인식 기술의 초기 역사에 관해 발표를 듣고 토론하는 시간을 가집니다. 이미지 분류 및 생성 기술이 빠르게 발전하는 이 때에, 얼굴이 어떻게 부호화되고 측정가능한 존재로 간주되기 시작했는지를 성찰해볼 수 있는 소중한 기회가 될 것입니다. 많은 관심과 참여 바랍니다.

- 제목: Face in Codes: Trained Observers and Sensory Multipliers in the Competing Universes, 1952–1971

- 초록: In the mid-1950s, a group of scientists began to adopt and systematize film and photography for analyzing facial and body movements. What seemed like a straightforward task––collecting data on human behaviors through visual instruments––posed new challenges for the scientists who were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of data. In response, they either underscored the importance of the investigator’s trained judgment in navigating through streams of data or devised a computerized system designed to categorize behavioral units, thereby enabling more expedient and objective analysis. Drawing on the writings and exchanges of Margaret Mead, Ray Birdwhistell, Paul Ekman, and Silvan Tomkins, this essay argues that the divide among these groups was deeply ingrained in their scientific practices, shaped by a complex interplay of professional identity, technological instruments, and the scientific object. Highlighting one of the earliest moments when scientists started encoding facial expressions to decode the cultural or emotional context that governs them helps us understand how these scientific objects came to be regarded as codifiable and measurable entities.
