서지학, 미술사학, 문학, 역사학 분야에서 동서양의 목판 인쇄에 대한 연구를 해오신 전문가들의 발표가 계획되어 있으니 관심 있는 분들의 많은 참여를 부탁드립니다.

심포지엄 개요
Art history as a discipline is built around the practice of comparison, from the slide projector to connoisseurship. Increasingly with the rise of 'global art history,' scholars engage in uneasy comparative strategies in order to reconfigure centers and peripheries marking similarity and difference across cultural and temporal fault lines. These exercises can be revealing, but they also run the risk of maintaining narrative hierarchies and assumptions of western European supremacy. The field of print history, in particular, unfolds vastly different histories depending on one's perspective, from the divers methods of carving and imprinting woodblocks to distinct approaches to conservation and care for woodblocks. In turn, histories of typography from Korea to Germany both intersect and diverge in important ways, and the adoption and/or refusal of different print technologies from Asia, across the Middle East and into Western Europe offer differing histories of faith, religion, emergent capitalism, and trade. Engaging with methodologies of comparative histories of print offers models by which to rethink teaching print, curating print, and understanding its complex history. It also, however, poses challenges to rethink a history of print that does not assume a teleological end in Gutenberg's workshop. This symposium will bring together scholars across histories of print media to rethink the horizon and possibilities of narrating a history of print, and the ways in which comparison both makes a global history of print possible while also posing methodological challenges.
